Fifty years ago, the Warner Bros. blockbuster movie “BULLITT” was released. The star of the show may have been Steve McQueen, but the ’68 Ford Mustang GT fastback in Highland Green drew a cult-like following. Five decades later, Ford is resurrecting the legend in a special edition, the 2019 Ford Mustang BULLITT.
What makes up the 2019 Mustang BULLITT? A little retro, a little modern tech, and a lot of performance set it apart from the rest of the lineup. You’ll find the 2019 Mustang BULLITT when it arrives at Fairley & Stevens in Dartmouth, NS.
What Sets the 2019 Mustang BULLITT Apart
First appearances are everything, even for retro-mod sports cars. The 2019 Mustang BULLITT comes in just two colours: Shadow Black, and the reminiscent Dark Highland Green you saw on the BULLITT 50 years ago.
Its wheels also give a glimpse into its appearance from years gone by. 19-inch Heritage-inspired aluminum-alloy wheels have that classic look, along with subtle chrome accents you’d see on the pony car-era model.
The 2019 Ford Mustang BULLITT is tied together nicely with a faux gas cap BULLITT logo and minimalist badging reminiscent of the late sixties.
But unlike the ’68 Mustang GT Fastback’s 230 horsepower which was impressive back then, the 2019 Mustang BULLITT is much more performance-oriented. It includes an open-air intake and the Mustang GT350 intake manifold on its 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 engine, as well as a larger throttle body and powertrain control module recalibrations.
In short, the 2019 Mustang BULLITT more than doubles the horsepower from 1968, tallying up to 480 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s good enough for a top speed of 163 miles per hour.
Row through the gears seamlessly with the six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching. And when it’s time to hit the track, Launch Control, selectable drive modes, and electronic line-lock ensure power gets directly where it should be – on the road.
It sounds fantastic as well. With standard black NitroPlate quad-tip exhaust, there’s a rumble you’ll feel in your chest and through the gas pedal.
It’s more modern than retro between the doors. The new BULLITT comes equipped with a leather-trimmed interior accented by green stitching on the dashboard, door panels, center console, and seats. Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, Reverse Sensing System, Track Apps, and a 12-inch LCD Digital Instrument Cluster with MyColor are just a few of the tech highlights.
For an awesome in-car experience, swoon to the sounds of a B&O Premium Audio system including a subwoofer and SiriusXM radio, all neatly tied together in Ford’s SYNC 3 system. It’s part and parcel with FordPass Connect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and voice-activated navigation.
Comfort comes from heated and cooled leather-trimmed front seats, not to mention optional RECARO sport seats for those who want a racier feel. And that retro look and feel? The cue-ball style shift knob pulls it together on the interior.
